Run to Return
The Union made it all the way to the final last season and they aren’t about to give up on their Open Cup dream just because of last year’s heartbreak. DC United often plays Open Cup games at the Maryland Soccerplex, but this matchup is too big to move from Audi Field.
Revenge on their mind
Last year, the Union waltzed into DC and hushed the crowd at the then-brand-new Audi Field. Philly owned the game and the 2-0 scoreline was more than fair. But all that means is that DC remembers a drubbing and will want to impose themselves at home. This will be a physical battle.
Top teams testing each other
Big spending DC United was expected to be around the top of the Eastern Conference, especially once they hung onto Luciano Acosta.
The Union? Few pundits put them on their current perch.
These two teams haven’t traded blows yet this season, and both know that this is a chance to assert yourself over an opponent you could very well see come playoff time.
Philadelphia and DC United go head to head at 7:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 12 at Audi Field on ESPN+.
