Strong defensive efforts earn McKenzie and Wagner MLS Team of the Week Honors

After another strong defensive effort led Philadelphia Union to the MLS is Back Tournament Quarterfinals, defenders Kai Wagner and Mark McKenzie have earned MLS Team of the Week honors that league announced on Wednesday afternoon.


Wagner and McKenzie played key roles in the club's second shutout of the Orlando based tournament that held New England to only five shots on target. Wagner led the way with nine possessions gained in the defensive third of the pitch with both defenders had two interceptions and a blocked shot.


The honor marks the four and fifth Team of the Week honors at the MLS is Back Tournament with McKenzie becoming the first Union player to earn multiple accolades in Florida. The previous accolades saw goalkeeper Andre Blake (Week 1), Brenden Aaronson (Week 2) along with McKenzie's week three appearance.


Philadelphia Union squares off against Sporting Kansas City in the MLS is Back Knockout Stage presented by Audi on Thursday, July 30th. Kick off from the ESPN Wide World of Sports is set for 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.
