After a resounding home victory over the weekend, Philadelphia Union II has been named the MLS NEXT Pro Team of the Matchweek, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The honors comes on the heels of Union II's dominant first-half attacking performance that powered the youthful side past Carolina Core FC by a 4-1 margin at Subaru Park on Sunday afternoon.
Facing a side that was on average four years older per player, Union II rose to the occasion to seize the control of the contest. Forward Malik Jakupovic jump started the rout, with a highlight-reel finish in the 20th minute to spark the comeback.
Stas Korzeniowski followed with a quick-fire brace, scoring twice in a five-minute span to turn momentum fully in favor of the hosts and give Union II a three-goal cushion heading into halftime.
Academy amateur Tyler Gladstone added a highlight of his own in his league debut, notching the assist on team captain Rafael Uzcátegui's headed corner kick chance to cap off a commanding performance.
Philadelphia Union II is back in action as they'll play under the lights on Friday night against Toronto FC II. Kickoff from Canada is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, April 17th, with coverage on MLSNEXTPro.com and OneFootball.
