Beyond the Team: Building Mental Strength Through Independent Training
Within the Philadelphia Union Youth Program, our directors share a unified belief: stepping outside the team environment to train independently isn’t just about improving technical ability; it’s essential for developing mental health, confidence, and resilience in young players.

For Lisa Cotter, Camps and Girls PPP Director, that growth shows up most in attitude and joy. “We see players light up when they train outside of their normal teams,” she explains. “It’s a chance to reset mentally, meet new coaches, and find confidence without the pressure of the regular season. That space to explore is incredibly healthy for their mindset.”

“When players train in new environments, they challenge their comfort zones,” says Tyler Fenstermacher, PDP Director. “That challenge builds not just skill, but the kind of self-belief and adaptability that carry over into competition and life. Mental strength is a muscle, and these sessions help it grow.”

Patrick Kelleher, Select Teams and Boys PPP Director, agrees, emphasizing that these moments of independence foster leadership and perspective. “When players step into different training environments, they start taking ownership of their development,” he says. “They become more self-aware and mentally tough because they’re learning to adapt, compete, and lead in new situations.”
At Philadelphia Union Youth, we believe training outside the team setting isn’t just supplemental, it’s transformational. By encouraging players to explore, reflect, and grow in different environments, we’re shaping more than athletes.
We’re shaping stronger, more confident young people on and off the field.
