Kai Wagner is Philadelphia Union's newest defender. Here are a few facts about the young German, who signed today and is currently with the Union for preseason training in St. Pete/Clearwater, FL.

  • Wagner is 21 years old but won’t be for much longer as his birthday is around the corner on Friday, February 15.
  • Despite his youth, Wagner has quite the resume having played with SSV Ulm 1846, Shalke 04 II and most recently Wurzburger Kickers. In his youth career, Wagner played for FC Augsburg academy as well as SSV Ulm and SV Lonsee.
  • Wagner will rep the Union No. 27 kit, becoming the fourth player in the club’s history to do so but the first defender to wear the number.
  • Coming to a new country can be scary for some. When Wagner was presented with the opportunity to join the Union, he jumped at it.
“I was really happy to hear that the Philadelphia Union wanted to have me,” Wagner said during his introductory media call. “It’s a new project for me, a big step to play in the MLS and for the first team of the Union. I don’t have to think so long about it, when my agent told me that they want me, I said to him that I would go to the U.S., go to Philadelphia and I’m happy about it and I can’t wait to start the season.
  • When asked about his goals for the upcoming season, Wagner had a few that he wanted to achieve. “I want to have a lot of success this year, I want to play a lot of games. I want to win every game, move forward every game. My personal target is to go step by step, play a lot of games and develop.”
