Monteiro earns Team of the Week honors after game-winning performance

His first open play goal came when the Union needed it most.

At 1-1, Toronto FC was looking to notch a come-from-behind win, and Alejandro Pozuelo was growing into the game. Philly needed a special moment from a special player, and Jamiro Monteiro delivered.

Connecting with Kacper Przybylko through the center, Monteiro spotted an opening and took it, streaking past TFC’s defenders before slotting home a stunning feed from the Union’s big striker. The celebration was a show of pride and relief, and Monteiro helped close out the match with his typical blend of energy and toughness. The Union had not pulled out a win in Toronto in five seasons, and they were seeking revenge for an opening day loss to the Reds.

This was the type of game that sets the tone for a season, and Monteiro has been a tone-setting player since breaking into the first eleven.

Monteiro now has two goals and two assists over six starts and eight appearances, and he has thrived in both box-to-box and attacking midfield roles.

He’s a deserving member of the MLS Team of the Week, and there is a good chance this won’t be the last time he’s recognized as one of the top players in the league.
