Next Match | Union battle Minnesota in U.S. Open Cup Opener Tuesday Night

Philadelphia Union begins its journey in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night as they travel to Minnesota United FC for a Round of 32 contest.

Kick off from Minnesota is set for 8:30 p.m. ET with the action broadcast for free on the B/R Football YouTube channel and the Bleacher Report app. 

The Union will be entering their 12th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup where the club has amassed a record of 19-7-4 in the Open Cup. They have reached the final of the tournament three times, all under Jim Curtin, with the most recent final coming in 2018 at the Houston Dynamo.

In their first matches of previous U.S. Open Cup tournaments that the Boys in Blue have entered, they have tallied a 7-4-0 mark, including a 4-2-0 record in opening round matches of their last six tournaments.

The match will be the first meeting in the tournament between the Union and Minnesota.

Minnesota United were pushed to the limit but advanced to the Round of 32 with a 3-1 road victory over Detroit City FC on Tuesday night. The Loons fell behind early in the match with a fifth minute goal from the hosts but battled back with a trio of goals in a six minute span to grab momentum. Pushing for the equalizer for the majority of the match, it finally game in the 60th minute with Franco Fragapane getting through at the hour mark. Three minutes later Emmanuel Iwe gave Minnesota the lead with Luis Amarilla adding the insurance goal to help the Loons secure their spot into the next round of the competition.
