In Philadelphia Union's most recent match against Charlotte FC, Markus Anderson scored his first-ever MLS goal, hitting the back of the net in the final moments to secure a 2-1 win for his team.
The milestone was one he's been working toward since his arrival in January 2024, and after a year and a half of dilligent and determined effort playing with Union II and recovering from injuries, he opened his first team account in front of a raucous crowd of Philly faithful in a packed Subaru Park.
Just over a week after his heroics, he joined the team on their away trip to take on Chicago Fire at Soldier Field. Before departure, he took time to reflect on the experience he's had with the club so far and his hopes for what's to come.
Now that you’ve had some time to reflect, how special was it for you to score your first MLS goal at Subaru Park and what did that experience mean to you?
It’s a moment I’ll never forget. Scoring my first MLS goal at Subaru Park, in front of our fans, after everything I’ve been through, the setbacks, the grind, it just hit different. I’ve pictured that moment a million times, and to have it actually happen here at home made it even more special. It’s a reminder that the work pays off, and I’m just getting started.
It's been about a year and a half since you signed back in January 2024. You've gone through alot during that time between minutes with Union II, recovering from injuries, and training with the first team. In what ways do you feel you've grown as a player since joining the Union?
Since coming to the Union, I’ve grown a lot, not just technically, but mentally too. The level here forces you to be sharper, more disciplined, and constantly evolving. I’ve had to adjust to the pace, the physicality, and the tactical side of the game. Being around experienced guys and a strong coaching staff has pushed me every day. I’m more confident now, more mature in how I approach the game, and I feel like I’m starting to really come into my own.
In what ways have you grown as a person?
Off the field, I’ve definitely grown up a lot. Being in a professional environment, away from home, you learn how to handle pressure, take care of yourself, and stay focused. I’ve had to become more independent and intentional with how I carry myself, not just for me, but for the people who believe in me. I’ve learned to be more patient, more resilient, and just more grounded overall. It’s all part of the journey, and I’m still learning every day.
How impactful was your time with Union II in preparing you to make an impact on for the first team?
My time with Union II was huge for my development. It gave me consistent minutes, the freedom to learn through mistakes, and the chance to sharpen the details in my game. The staff there really challenged me and helped me grow in the areas I needed to level up tactically, physically, and mentally. It was the perfect stepping stone to prepare me for the intensity and expectations of the first team. Without that foundation, I wouldn’t be as ready to contribute the way I am now.
You’ve now earned an opportunity to contribute on the first team level amidst one of the most successful starts to a season in club history. What's that been like for you and what do you think makes this team special?
What makes this team special is the mentality -- 100%. Everyone’s bought in, everyone works for each other, and there’s this hunger to keep pushing no matter how well we’re doing. It’s not just talent, it’s the culture, the chemistry, the way we hold each other accountable. Whether you’re starting or coming off the bench, you feel that trust and that standard. That’s what drives the success. it’s a real team, through and through.
How has the balance between competition and camaraderie in the locker room and on the training field allow you and your teammates find the success that you've had?
That balance is everything. The competition pushes all of us to stay sharp, nobody gets too comfortable. But at the same time, there’s real respect and support in the locker room. We compete hard, but we lift each other up too. That mix keeps the level high without losing the unity. You can feel that energy every day, we’re all trying to be the best version of ourselves, and we’re doing it together.
What are your personal goals for the rest of the season?
For me, it’s about staying consistent, staying healthy, and making the most of every opportunity I get. I want to keep growing, keep contributing, and keep proving that I belong at this level. Whether it’s goals, assists, or just doing the dirty work for the team, whatever helps us win, I’m locked in on that. And of course, I want to keep building momentum so I’m in a position to impact every game I’m in.
Is there anyone at the club that you've leaned on the most during your journey?
My coaches and the guys in the locker room have definitely played a role, but for me it’s been more about observing. Just watching how they move, how they carry themselves, how they handle different situations. I’m a very observant person, so I’ve learned a lot just by paying attention and picking up the little details. That’s helped me grow just as much as anything else. Sometimes the best lessons come from just listening and watching.
What are you looking forward to most in the second half of the season?
I’m looking forward to just building on everything. Continuing to grow, helping the team, and being ready when my number’s called. The second half is where things get real, and I want to be a part of those big moments. I’m excited to keep earning trust, keep making an impact, and hopefully be a part of something special down the stretch.
