It’s been almost four years since Venezuelan midfielder Jesus Bueno signed with the Union, and while this year he's experienced the most significant change in and around the club since his arrival in 2021, he's welcomed the challenges and opportunities that this season has brought about.
Through Matchday 14, Philadelphia Union has emerged as the top team in all of Major League Soccer, sitting in first in the Supporters' Shield standings. During that span, Bueno, affectionately called ChuChu amongst his teammates, staff, and fans has both embraced a role off the bench, and most recently made his second start of the season, contributing 71 minutes in the team's 1-0 win against Atlanta.
This week, he reflected on his journey at the club and why this year in particular is so special.
This is your fifth season in Philadelphia – is that hard to believe?
Five years ago I would never have thought I'd experience everything I've experienced at this club, but I enjoy it and value it to the fullest. The truth is, right now I look back at everything I've experienced at the club and I'm proud to say that every minute I've been at this club I've valued and enjoyed to the fullest.
How have you grown as a player since arriving here back in July 2021?
I think it's changed me in an inexplicable way; it's shaped me as a person and as a man. I think the good and bad times have taught me a lot and helped me live life beautifully.
Is there anyone who's supported you most?
I think my family has been the most important thing for me throughout my career and my friends. Also, I want to thank the coach, who, in the short time he's been at the club, has had a positive impact on my life.
This year’s team has had a very strong start to the season – from your perspective, what makes this team so special, both on the field and in the locker room?
I think the beautiful family that has formed this year has helped us become a better team. I think we're now just a simple group of friends being happy with a ball, and I think that's been the key to our success.
What’s been your favorite moment of the season so far?
Simply the game against LA Galaxy, when we were able to come back in the last minute. It was one of the most exciting games I've experienced. The most important thing is how resilient we were coming back from a 2-0 deficit.
What are your goals for the season?
The goals are simple and clear... Trophies. I think we deserve it for how we're working. The fans deserve it, and that's what we're all focused on.
