An early goal proved to be the difference as Philadelphia Union fell to Cruz Azul by a 1-0 margin in their 2026 Leagues Cup opener on Thursday night at Subaru Park.
José Paradela provided the game-winning offense for La Máquina just three minutes into the contest, taking a pass from Omar Campos before ripping a strike from outside the box to give Cruz Azul the early advantage.
Playing in hot and humid conditions, both sides remained committed to their styles of play in a tightly contested match that produced limited scoring opportunities. Philadelphia found more of its attacking rhythm after the break, with Milan Iloski and Cavan Sullivan among those looking to unlock the Cruz Azul defense, but the Boys in Blue were unable to find the equalizer.

Head Coach Ryan Richter leaned on team depth for his first XI of the team's 2026 Leagues Cup campaign, rotating the group significantly after three strenuous wins at Subaru Park in their return to MLS play following Leagues Cup.Â
Andrew Rick started between the posts, protected by a backline featuring Nathan Harriel wearing the captain's armband, Japhet Sery Larsen, Frankie Westfield, and Kai Wagner. In the midfield, Quinn Sullivan made his first start since returning from his ACL injury, appearing alongside his brother Cavan, marking their first time in the XI together.
