The Cup: A New Favorite Tournament

Banner The Cup Review

This past weekend, WSFS Bank Sportsplex hosted the Philadelphia Union’s The Cup inaugural event. The two-day soccer tournament on June 7th and 8th was a can’t-miss event as only a limited number of teams were accepted into the tournament, and each division hosted a maximum of eight teams. Each team played three games at our world-class facility and immersed itself in the Philadelphia Union environment.

Out of the 26 teams competing across five divisions (U12, U14 Gold, U14 Blue, U15, and U16), only five teams won their respective bracket championships. Additionally, individual awards were presented in each division for MVP, Golden Boot (top scorer), and Golden Glove (best goalkeeper).

While some Philadelphia Union-affiliated teams participated, several clubs traveled to Chester, PA, for the tournament, including Abingdon Football Club, Hamilton Soccer Club, Kearny Thistle United FC, Franklin Township SC, and FC Ballyhoo.

The U12 games were set as 9v9, and the winners for bracket A were Tiki-taka, scoring an overall of 20 goals, with all three wins, while the bracket B winners were FC Boston Bolts 2013 Northeast Academy Black. The U14 groups played an 11v11 and were split into Gold and Blue, but that did not stop our Philadelphia Union teams in both brackets, as the Gold winners are Philadelphia Union PPP 2011 Navy, and the Blue winners were Philadelphia Union PPP 2011 White.

The U15 and U16 divisions also played in an 11v11 format and featured several compelling matches. HEX Keystone ECNL-RL 10B tied with Real Futbol Club Real FC Diablos in the U15 games, with the same record of 2-0-1, but it was HEX Keystone that was awarded the winners as they had a higher goal difference. The U16 winners were Force Prospects, winning all three of their games and racking up 27 goals in total.

The Cup’s Inaugural Event, hosted by the Philadelphia Union, was a great weekend that showed off the amazing talent of young players around our area and kept the competition alive in each game.
