The United States' memorable FIFA World Cup run came to an end on Monday night, falling 4-1 to Belgium in the Round of 16.
Belgium struck first in the ninth minute through Charles De Ketelaere before the United States answered with an equalizer from Malik Tillman on a free kick in the 31st minute. The parity lasted only briefly, however, as De Ketelaere restored Belgium's advantage two minutes later.
The Red Devils extended their lead after halftime and added a fourth goal in the closing stages to secure a 4-1 victory and a place in the FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals.
Although the tournament ended in the Round of 16, the United States recorded its first FIFA World Cup knockout-round victory since June 17, 2002, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 before advancing to face Belgium. The 2026 tournament also marked a milestone for the Philadelphia Union, with multiple club alumni representing their nations on soccer's biggest stage, highlighted by Freese becoming the first Union Homegrown to appear in a FIFA World Cup match and Trusty becoming the first Union Homegrown to score in the competition while Brenden Aaronson and Mark McKenzie made appearances as well in the group stage.
