The Interview | Alejandro Bedoyua

After more than a decade in Philadelphia and 17 years in professional soccer, Alejandro Bedoya is preparing to hang up his boots.

The longtime Philadelphia Union captain announced Monday that he will retire from professional soccer at the conclusion of the club’s 2026 season, bringing an end to a career that has seen him become one of the most influential figures in Union history.

Bedoya joined the Boys in Blue in 2016 and has worn the captain’s armband since 2017, helping lead Philadelphia through the most successful era in club history. During his time with the Union, he has lifted two Supporters’ Shields, captained the club to the 2022 Eastern Conference Championship and its first MLS Cup Final, and became just the second player in club history to reach 300 appearances across all competitions.

Following his retirement announcement, Bedoya sat down for an extended conversation to discuss his decision, look back on his journey in Philadelphia and reflect on what the club and city have meant to him throughout his career.
