Philadelphia Union Acquire Up To $450,000 In Allocation Money From Chicago Fire
Union trade forward CJ Sapong to Chicago
CHESTER, Pa. (February 23, 2019) – Philadelphia Union announced today that the club has received up to $450,000 in Allocation Money from the Chicago Fire in exchange for forward CJ Sapong.
The specifics of the Allocation Money are as follows: $200,000 in 2019 General Allocation Money, $100,000 in 2020 Targeted Allocation Money, and an additional $100,000 in 2019 General Allocation Money to be conveyed to Philadelphia should the Chicago Fire acquire said funds this year.
If the Fire do not acquire an additional $100,000 in 2019 General Allocation Money to convey to Philadelphia this season, then that money conveys as GAM in 2020, and the Union also receive $50,000 in 2020 Targeted Allocation Money from Chicago should Sapong hit certain performance incentives in 2019.

“On behalf of the Philadelphia Union, we would like to thank CJ for his service to the club and wish him well in Chicago,” said Ernst Tanner, Union Sporting Director. “CJ has produced many memorable moments in a Union shirt, and his efforts in the community have been admirable. With the strong state of our forward depth chart, we believe that this is the best move for both CJ and for the Union at this time.”

Over four seasons with Philadelphia, Sapong totaled 36 goals and 14 assists in 123 appearances (108 starts). He scored a career-best 16 goals in 2017, a year in which he was also the Union’s nominee for the MLS Humanitarian of the Year award. He was originally acquired by Philadelphia from Sporting Kansas City on December 8, 2014 in exchange for the Union’s highest selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
