Next Day News: Aaronson stars, but Wagner, Steel also make headlines

Check out the Match Recap from the Union's big away point against Atlanta United.

In case you missed it, a Union homegrown player scored in his first MLS start for the second consecutive season. Take a bow, Brenden Aaronson!

MLSSoccer.com immediately picked up on homegrown teenager Brenden Aaronson’s Sunday night achievement. The young attacking midfielder’s well-struck goal made the front page of the league’s site.
The league’s Matt Doyle also pointed to Aaronson’s sumptuous throughball that sent in Fafa Picault as a standout moment in the midfielder’s MLS debut.
Beginning at the 32:10 mark, you can see what Doyle, Max Bretos, Bobby Warshaw, and former Union striker Charlie Davies think about the Union-Atlanta United match from Sunday night in their Matchday Central video segment.
Aaronson’s goal also made the Best Three Minutes of the weekend, right at the 3:00 mark.
And how about this quote from Jim Curtin following the match? “I love that the group’s pissed off that we just tied in Atlanta,” the head coach said following the 1-1 draw on the road. Philly may still be searching for their first win this year, but Curtin isn’t letting a difficult opening trio of matches dent the team’s ambition on the heels of a 50 point season.
Atlanta’s crowd brought plenty of noise, but the Union kept their opponents quiet on the pitch. Only Ezequiel Barco’s goal and Josef Martinez’s bicycle kick registered as shots on target, and you can check out
all the images from the club’s strong defensive outing here.
Aaronson grabbed the headlines but he wasn’t the only player that stood out against Atlanta United. Kai Wagner had another strong outing and Brotherly Game spoke to him about playing in Philly and bedding in with his new squad.
The Union weren’t the only team within the club in action last weekend. Bethlehem Steel played their first ever match at Talen Energy Stadium. Two players looking to follow Aaronson’s path to the Union got on the pitch for Steel, and best friends Ben Ofeimu and Issa Rayyan spoke before Saturday’s game about their ambitions this season and in the future.
