Anytime an athlete gets to make a professional debut, it is a moment they will never forget. In the case of Philadelphia Union homegrown Brenden Aaronson, his story will be one that most won't forget. After waiting patiently for his breakthrough moment in the club's first two matches but not making an appearance, Aaronson was called upon to make his debut in the starting XI at defending MLS Cup Champions Atlanta United FC.
Showing nerves of steel harnessed over the past year and a half in high-pressure contests in the USL, Aaronson slotted in perfectly and played beyond his 18-year-old age. A timely cross into the box that was barely missed, leading Fafa Picault into a breakaway position. Aaronson's largest impact came two minutes into the second half, looking to create and then firing a right-footed shot that will stay in Brad Guzan's nightmares for awhile.
After a strong performance, there were questions whether Aaronson would keep his spot with the return of Marco Fabián from suspension. Would two number 10's work in this new system? Aaronson embraced the challenge that only a young, hungry and fearless player has by slotting just behind Fabián and increasing his defensive work rate. Since Aaronson's first appearance, the Union are unbeaten. Yes that's the facts but it hasn't just been Aaronson. Fellow IBX Live Fearless Player of the Month nominees David Accam and Kai Wager also played their parts in a successful March but you, the fans, have chosen the homegrown and his strong first month as a pro. If this is just the start of Aaronson's career, Union fans cannot wait for what else is in store for 2019.
