Opponent Scout: Union are Jersey bound to face Montreal

Philadelphia Union will take another short trip up to New Jersey to take on the Montreal Impact on Sunday at 7PM. Montreal is playing a ‘home’ match at Red Bull Arena due to the travel limitations enforced by Canada relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite missing many key pieces to their lineup, the Union proved yet again that they have a deep squad picking up three points in a dramatic win against New England. Anthony Fontana had the best match of his professional career by scoring a brace after subbing on about halfway through the second half. His late game heroics earned him a spot on Team of the Week as well as MLS’s Goal of the Week. It wouldn’t be a surprise and it would be extremely well deserved to see Font in the Starting XI this weekend against Montreal. His teammates praised his hard work ethic on social media following the win.

The Union are currently in second place and are continuing to climb the Eastern Conference standings.

Montreal Impact has not had variety in their competition in the first set of matches since the MLS is Back Tournament due to not being able to travel in and out of Canada - Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal have been playing round-robin the last six games. In their next three games, Montreal will make their way across the border to play a ‘home’ match at Red Bulls Arena against Philadelphia before they hit the road and matchup against the Revs and then return to take on their American hosts the Red Bulls. Montreal is currently in fifth place in the East with a 5-5-1 record under new Head Coach Thierry Henry.

Players to watch
Anthony Fontana: Font quickly became a super sub in his last match scoring a brace and game-winning goal in the 95’. Look for this super sub to possibly start against Montreal on Sunday with Jose Martinez out due to yellow card accumulation.

Saphir Taïder: Taïder leads his team in assists and passing and MLSsoccer.com coined him as “one of the most skillful players to ever play in Major League Soccer.”
