Union in control of own destiny as Supporters' Shield race tightens

SupportersShield

While Philadelphia Union suffered just their fourth loss of the 2020 Major League Soccer campaign, the club is still in the best position to claim the Supporters' Shield. With the 2-1 road loss to Columbus coupled with Toronto FC's victory over Inter Miami CF, the two sides sit tied on points and points per game but the Union own a significant lead in the goal differential tiebreaker.

Both Columbus and Portland too have a shot at claiming the  trophy but their paths to the Supporters' Shield isn't an easy one. Both would need to win both of their final two games, hope that both Philly and Toronto fall and make up the goal differential. Currently the Union sport the best GD at +22 while the Crew are at +15 and Portland are at +12. Toronto's seemingly only path to the title is to get a more favorable result compared to the Boys in Blue.

The 2020 Decision Day presented by AT&T will be a thrilling one but in the end the Union still control their own destiny with a win over the New England Revolution at Subaru Park. Three points would eliminate the hopes for both the Crew and Timbers and forced Toronto to win by the largest margin in MLS history against the New York Red Bulls. Kick off from Subaru Park is set for 3:30 PM ET.
