Philadelphia Union II suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to New York City FC II on Sunday afternoon at Kinetic Field at WSFS Bank Sportsplex.
The two sides battled through a tightly contested match that remained scoreless for more than 90 minutes, with both teams struggling to find the breakthrough. Union II's defense stood strong throughout the afternoon, with goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook making two saves to keep the visitors off the scoreboard deep into stoppage time.
As the match entered the closing moments, the Boys in Blue nearly found a dramatic winner. In the 91st minute, captain Rafael Uzcátegui forced a save with a dangerous effort on target. Moments later, Óscar Benítez rose to meet a service into the box but saw his header sail just over the crossbar as Union II continued to apply pressure.
The match appeared destined for a scoreless draw until the ninth minute of stoppage time when New York City FC II found the decisive moment. Cooper Flax converted a free kick in the dying moments to give the visitors a 1-0 lead and ultimately all three points.
