After scoring Saturday's game winning goal against Charlotte FC, Philadelphia Union's Markus Anderson has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Making his first league appearance in nearly a year, Anderson rose to the occasion, scoring his first-ever MLS goal to help lead his team to their 10th league result in a row. Entering in the second half, Anderson relied on the confidence he'd built during appearances with Union II in MLS NEXT Pro and contributed what the game needed.
That moment came in the 98th minute as he placed himself perfectly in the box to received a headed pass from Frankie Westfield to sneak it under the keeper.
In the celebratory moments following the match that saw the Union return to the front of the Supporters' Shield race, Anderson talked about the goal and how much it meant to him personally.
"Honestly, it felt amazing," Anderson said.
"When [Charlotte] scored, we were just working hard, fighting our way back, trying to see whatever happens. When I saw that ball go into the net, there was just a lot of emotions. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know how to celebrate. I just ran to the corner, saw a bunch of my teammates, and celebrated."
After playing their only home match of the month, the Union have a well deserved week off to recharge ahead of another congested schedule that sees the Boys in Blue play seven games in 24 days. It all begins with a midweek clash with Chicago Fire FC on Wednesday, June 25th. Kick off from the Windy City is set for 8:30PM ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
