Preview | Union meet Austin FC in preseason friendly

ATX-Preview

Philadelphia Union is set to take on Austin FC in their second preseason friendly on Tuesday, January 23rd. There will not be a stream, so keep an eye out for updates on the site’s annual live blog from Florida.

The Boys in Blue return to Al Lang Stadium just two days after their opening fixture against CR Flamengo, which finished in a 2-0 loss. The team focused on recovery on Monday, and they’ll be back on the pitch for a 6:30 kick for their second-ever outing against Austin FC. The two teams met in Florida just last year with the Union overcoming a pair of one-goal deficits to nab a 3-2 winner.

2024 will be Austin FC’s fourth Major League Soccer campaign, and the regular season will bring their first-ever match against Philadelphia Union in March. Head Coach Josh Wolff’s squad finished 12th overall in the Western Conference last season missing the playoff cut, but their offseason has brought about signings from veteran-status to academy elevations. Among their roster moves includes the addition of 23-year-old Guilherme Biro from Brazilian side Mirassol Futebol Clube, USMYNT standout midfielder 17-year-old Micah Burton, and 29-year-old free agent keeper Stefan Cleveland who is expected to assume the role of backup behind Brad Stuver.

Austin also had the first overall pick in the MLS Re-Entry SuperDraft, selecting 28-year-old Colombian attacker Jáder Obrian, who formerly spent three seasons with FC Dallas.

Thursday’s preseason meet-up will be a preview of what’s to come this spring when the teams go head-to-head when it counts at Q2 Stadium in Texas on March 16th.
