Philadelphia Union sign 2023 Unified Team to Contracts

As part of Philadelphia Union's commitment to Soccer For All, the club announced the signing of its 11 athletes for its Unified team. The team comprised of George Washington High School student athletes got a one-of-a-kind experience days before their big match against New York Red Bulls by signing official contracts for the club.

Upon arrival, the group was welcomed to the Tunnel Club decorated in blue and gold, where homegrowns Jack McGlynn and Nate Harriel joined them for a meet-and-greet lunch provided by Chick-fil-a. Head Coach Jim Curtin arrived soon after, taking to the stage for an inspiring pregame speech. Each athlete was called to the stage to receive a contract alongside the Head Coach, with their friends, teammates, and Union players in the audience. After signing on the dotted line, the group was guided to the locker room for one surprise. When they entered, each athlete found their very own custom authentic Union kit and a customized Adidas soccer backpacks brimming with must-have game day essentials, including with a water bottle, scarf, lanyard, stickers, magnets, and even an Andre Blake Bobblehead.

On September 3rd after the Union's resounding 4-1 victory over rival Red Bulls the 2023 Philadelphia Union's Unified Special Olympics PA team took to the pitch for a friendly against the Red Bulls’ Special Olympics New Jersey Unified squad.

The match was the ultimate gameday experience for the team that signed contracts on Friday afternoon at Subaru Park. After a warmup period, both teams walked out of the tunnel with smoke from the Sons of Ben before kicking off the two 20-minute halves. Head Coach Jim Curtin as well as homegrowns Nathan Harriel and Jeremy Rafanello cheer on the sides and awarded both teams for the accomplishments in the postgame medal ceremony.

With a commitment to to facilitating safe spaces for all fans to enjoy Philadelphia Union games and events at Subaru Park free from discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, the entire front office staff completed inclusivity and allyship training. As part of the training that took place ahead of the Union's Pride Night members of the Union staff met to discuss and learn how they can be a better ally.

At the end of the training members of staff were given Safe Space pins that will be worn throughout the season to let fans know they have successfully completed inclusivity and allyship training. In addition to the pins the staff wore Pride shirts courtesy of Subaru.
