Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake stands on the cusp of history

After leading Jamaica to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over New Caledonia, the Reggae Boyz are now just one win away from securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

That decisive final step comes Tuesday evening, when Blake and Jamaica face DR Congo in a winner-take-all playoff with a World Cup berth on the line. Don't miss the action on FS1 starting at 5PM ET.

One Step from History

Jamaica’s journey to this moment has been built on defensive discipline and composure under pressure—qualities embodied by their captain between the posts.

Against New Caledonia, Blake delivered when called upon, making a key save in the first half to preserve the shutout as Jamaica limited their opponents to just a single shot on target.

The result pushed Jamaica to within one victory of its first World Cup appearance since 1998, a milestone that would mark a new chapter for the Caribbean nation.

Captain, Leader, Backbone

Blake’s influence extends far beyond shot-stopping for the Boys in Blue. The Union keeper has long been the backbone of Jamaica’s national team, earning more than 90 caps and recording 35 clean sheets for his country.

During the final round of qualifying, Jamaica conceded just three goals—an illustration of the defensive stability anchored by their captain.

His leadership will once again be critical against a DR Congo side standing between Jamaica and the global stage.

Scouting the Opposition: DR Congo

Standing in Jamaica’s way are the Warriors of the Equator, who will have the advantage of fresh legs in the altitute of Mexico.

The African nation earned its place in the intercontinental playoff after navigating a high-pressure CAF qualification path. DR Congo finished as one of the top runners-up in the second round of African qualifying to advance to a knockout playoff tournament.

From there, they battled through a single-elimination bracket in Morocco—defeating Cameroon in the semifinals and then overcoming Nigeria in a penalty kick shootout in the final to earn their spot in the intercontinental playoff.

Their squad features proven talent across Europe’s top leagues, including defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka (West Ham United), Arthur Masuaku (Lens), and forward Yoane Wissa (Newcastle United). Leading the group is captain Chancel Mbemba (Lille), a veteran presence anchoring the backline.

With a blend of physicality, pace, and top-level experience, DR Congo presents a formidable final hurdle in this winner-take-all clash.

Union Roots on the World Stage

Blake’s pursuit of World Cup qualification highlights the global impact of Philadelphia Union players, with the club’s goalkeeper once again showcasing his quality on the international stage. With a win, he'll join teammate Danley Jean Jacques of Haiti as they look to become the first active players from the Boys in Blue to play at a World Cup.

Now, with one match remaining, the equation is simple.

Win—and Jamaica returns to the World Cup.

And at the heart of it all stands Andre Blake.
