Behind the Broadcast: Opening Day at the FIFA Women's World Cup

Opening day of a World Cup is always special. We have been waiting for nearly a week to broadcast game one. For today's opener between Canada and China, we left for the game around noon, arriving at 12:30 p.m. for the game which would start after 4 p.m.
We had a small production meeting, then had to test the equipment for three announcers. We had to make sure the stick mikes and the headsets all worked so that you could hear each other, along with being able to hear our studio talent from Vancouver. After rehearsing our pre-game hit, now you sit and wait, which is sometimes the most difficult part. What do you do for the next hour or so of free time?

All announcers are different and have routines of their own. I try to look over my notes, have conversations with the other announcers I am working with, plus watch what is going on down below us at field level.

We were able to watch the opening ceremonies which featured Sarah McLachlan. As I do a tournament, I try to soak in all of the atmosphere, especially when it comes down to the final. You never know when it might be your last World Cup or Olympic experience so you want to take it all in.
As for the game itself, I thought Canada might prevail 2-0. but that was not the case. Were it not for a late penalty kick converted by Christine Sinclair, the game would have ended scoreless.
It was a great day for Canadian soccer as over 53,000 attended this game and they went home happy. As for the announcers, it was back to the hotel where I am typing this from the lobby. Have to head upstairs to pack for a 6 a.m. flight to Winnipeg. This means a 3:45 a.m. wakeup call and a 4:30 departure. Sunday will include attending four team practices and press conferences as we get ready for a doubleheader on Monday.
Our group is covering Sweden vs Nigeria and U.S.A. vs Australia. Time for me to head upstairs and pack. Looking forward to that first U.S.A. game.
