Homegrown midfielder earns club-record seventh Team of the Matchday selection of the season
Philadelphia Union Homegrown midfielder Cavan Sullivan was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday bench for Matchday 27 following his performance in the Union's 4-3 comeback victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night. The honor is Sullivan's third consecutive Team of the Matchday selection and seventh of the season, the most by a Union player in a single campaign.
Sullivan recorded a goal and an assist as the Union erased a three-goal deficit to extend their MLS unbeaten streak to 11 matches, tying the longest unbeaten run in club history. After trailing 3-0, the Union scored four unanswered second-half goals to become just the fifth team in MLS history to overcome a three-goal deficit and win a regular-season match. The 16-year-old assisted Bruno Damiani’s goal in the 64th minute before scoring two minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Milan Iloski equalized in the 68th minute before an own goal in the 73rd minute completed the comeback.​
With his goal and assist, Sullivan extended his goal contribution streak to eight consecutive MLS matches, the longest by a teenager in league history. He is also the youngest player in MLS history and the first teenager to record a goal contribution in eight straight regular-season matches. Sullivan also recorded his 12th assist and 19th goal contribution of the season, setting the MLS single-season record for assists by a teenager and tying for the second-most goal contributions by a teenager in a single season.
His latest performance also extended Philadelphia’s streak of having a teenager score or assist in an MLS match to 12 consecutive games dating back to May 24, the longest such streak in league history.
Sullivan has recorded seven goals and 12 assists in 24 MLS appearances this season and now joins the U.S. Men’s National Team for his first senior camp. The Union return home to close out September against Orlando City SC at Subaru Park on Saturday, September 26 (7:30 p.m. ET / Apple TV).
