Philadelphia Union alumni Matt Freese and Auston Trusty helped the United States secure its place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Australia on Friday afternoon in Seattle.
The win moved the Americans to six points through two Group D matches and guaranteed advancement to the tournament's knockout stage.
Freese earned his second consecutive World Cup start and posted a clean sheet as the United States controlled the match from the opening whistle. The Americans grabbed an early lead through an Australia own goal in the 11th minute before Alex Freeman doubled the advantage just before halftime.
In the 80th minute, Trusty entered the match off the bench for his FIFA World Cup debut, becoming the second Philadelphia Union Academy alumnus to appear for the United States at the 2026 tournament. The defender helped the Americans see out the final stages of the match and preserve the clean sheet alongside Freese.
The result marked another milestone for Philadelphia Union's player pathway. One week after Freese became the first Union Homegrown to play in a FIFA World Cup match, Trusty made his World Cup debut as the United States advanced to the knockout rounds with a match to spare.
The United States concludes Group D play on June 25 against Türkiye with a chance to secure first place in the group.
