Philadelphia Union won’t have to wait long to try to bounce back from Saturday’s setback that saw the club suffer just their third loss of the season. FC Cincinnati makes the trip east to Subaru Park for an Eastern Conference clash on Wednesday night beginning at 7:30 PM on PHL17 and PhiladelphiaUnion.com.
The midweek tilt will be the second matchup this season with last time being arguably the Union’s worst offensive showing with the club unable to generate a single shot on goal. Despite their struggles, the defense remained consistent holding the Ohio-based club to just a single shot on target and each team came away with a point after a scoreless draw. The match will also mark the Subaru Park return of former Union midfielder Haris Mendunjanin for the first time since Philly’s first playoff victory nearly a year ago.
The Union currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 8-3-4 record while FC Cincinnati finds itself outside a playoff spot in twelfth with a 3-8-4 record. Although Cincy is toward the bottom of the standings, they have improved since their inaugural MLS season in 2019 and are continuing to build their club. They are coming off of a 2-0 loss to a strong Minnesota United squad and Coach Jaap Stam was quite positive in his comments about the loss: “I’m very happy with our performance…We played very well. I think we dominated big parts of the game. In the second half, we created opportunities, but we didn’t score.”
Players to Watch
Brenden Aaronson: The Homegrown continues to create buzz around the League through his on-field performance which has created international transfer rumors.
Kendall Waston: Waston will be in charge of limiting the chances of a usually high producing and strong counter-attacking Philly offense.
