Winning ways

The Philadelphia Union have picked up four straight wins since returning to MLS play in July, adding 12 points to their total for a swing up the standings to 13th place. While they’re still near the bottom of the East, they’re just five points out from the playoff line, meaning every result from this point will impact their pursuit of a postseason berth.

Their most recent three-point outing came on Sunday against New York City FC, erasing a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 win on the road at Yankee Stadium. A second-half opener from Danley Jean Jacques and a brace from Bruno Damiani by way of assists from the Sullivan brothers secured their second straight comeback.

Next up, Miami

Next up, they’ll take on Inter Miami – a team that’s been in the Major League Soccer spotlight since Lionel Messi’s signing in 2023.

As it stands, they side from South Florida sits at 2nd in the Eastern Conference with 38 points – five behind first-place Nashville SC who bullied them to a  4-1 loss at Geodis Park on Saturday. Telasco Segovia scored in first half stoppage to make it 1-1, but three unanswered goals from BJ Callaghan’s side secured all three points for Nashville. Inter Miami will visit Philadelphia hoping to turn the tide back in their favor.

The last time the pair met was just under three months ago – both team’s final match before the World Cup break. Milan Iloski gave Philly a two-goal lead in the first 10 minutes of the May 24th match at Nu Stadium in the sunshine state, but the match ultimately unfolded into a 6-4 barnburner in favor of the hosts. The match was former Union Head Coach Bradley Carnell’s last – former Union player turned academy coach, first team assistant, and most recently Union II Head Coach Ryan Richter has since taken over as the team’s interim, winning his first four matches at the helm for a Union coaching record.

Monitoring Messi

Leo Messi played in Inter Miami’s most recent game, making an emotional return to play less than one week after his father, Jorge, passed away. While he missed a first-half penalty opportunity, he assisted Segovia’s goal, marking his 20th Inter Miami goal contribution this year.

Adversity aside, Messi is always capable of manufacturing the magic that’s made him one of the most notable athletes in the World, so should he be up for the match, he’ll be one to watch at Subaru Park.

Players to watch

  • In his third season with Inter Miami, former FC Barcelona and Uruguay National Team legend 39-year-old forward Luis Suárez has 10 goals and six assists so far this season. He scored a hat trick against the Union in their most recent meeting in May.
  • 32-year-old Argentinian Designated Player Rodrigo DePaul has scored four goals and provided eight assists in his second year with Miami. The midfielder has been a consistent starter for both Inter Miami and Argentina – he appeared in la Albiceleste’s XI in the World Cup final against Spain.
  • One of the team’s younger stars, 23-year-old Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia has three goals and eight assists so far this season, scoring the lone Miami goal in their most recent outing against Nashville SC.
  • Another young player to watch is Mateo Silvetti – the 20-year-old Argentinian U-22 player has scored three goals and notched four assists. 2026 is his first full season with Miami – coming from Newell’s Old Boy he signed a deal through 2029 in August 2025.

Recapping Richter's press conference

On Tuesday, Richter met with the media to preview the matchup ahead, expressing it's magnitude on and off the field.

"It's a great opportunity for us. It's a great opportunity for the club, just because of the following that Miami and Messi bring with them. There's always more eyes on this game. Even locally, there's more eyes in this game. So it's an opportunity for us to to show what we can do, and to gain more fans of the club in the way that we play the game, the way that we approach the game, the way that we show the best version of ourselves," Richter said.

"I think it's something that maybe some soccer fans that aren't necessarily following the Union, especially in the Philly area, can get behind when they see a good performance against a team like Miami."
