Philadelphia Union enjoyed similar success against both squads in the regular season with the home team grabbing all three points in each of the previous match ups. Against Nashville SC, the Union dropped the first matchup in July with a second-minute counter attack from CJ Sapong proving to be the difference in the Music City. The Union answered back in October with a 1-0 win of their own courtesy of a Kacper Przybylko finish from the penalty spot. Nashville SC was undefeated on their home turf during the regular season, going 8-0-9 the propelled them to the No. 3 seed in the East.

Against Orlando City SC, the two sides too split results with Orlando City SC grabbing a 2-1 win in late July against the Union via a 2-1 margin. In September the Union got their revenge with Kai Wagner blasting a first-half goal and Kacper Przybylko netting a second-half brace to notch a 3-1 win at Subaru Park. Orlando City SC grabbed the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference after racking up 51 points in the regular season courtesy of a 13-9-12 record.
