Philadelphia Union topped their Leagues Cup group with victories over Club Tijuana and Queretaro F.C. and now await their Round of 32 opponent that will take place at Subaru Park on Thursday, August 3rd.
Having played each of the first two matchdays the Union faithful and technical staff will for sure be watching Saturday’s East Group 2 finale as the result will ultimately determine who the Union will host as the runners-up for that group will face the Boys in Blue. Take a look at the scenarios that will determine the Union's opponent.
D.C. United
The Union's I-95 rivals currently lead the group with 3 points after defeating CF Montreal on Wednesday night by a 1-0 margin in Canada. The only way the Boys in Blue host D.C. United would be if Pumas UNAM win in regulation.
CF Montreal
CF Montreal is in the same position as the Union having played both of their group stage matches already. The Canadian side opened the tournament with a 2-2 result against Pumas UNAM where they gained the extra point with a penalty kick shootout win before falling at home to D.C. Montreal has the most scenarios which seems them facing the Union. Should D.C. United defeat Pumas UNAM in regulation, they'd be headed to Subaru Park on points. Should the match go to penalty kicks, they'd be rooting to D.C. United as well as the first tiebreaker is head-to-head results to which Montreal owns over the Liga MX side.
Pumas UNAM
While Pumas has yet to claim a victory, they showed their never-say-die attitude to rally back from a two-goal deficit in Montreal to force penalty kicks. The Liga MX side controls its own destiny with a result seeing them extend their stay in Leagues Cup. To face the Union and set up a rematch from their 2019 friendly, Pumas UNAM would have to battle to a draw in regulation and defeat D.C. United in penalty kicks.
