With the start of the club’s second season around the corner, Bethlehem Steel FC announced the signings of three players since the start of March. The deals involve forward Chris Nanco and defenders Charlie Reymann and Matt Mahoney. They are pending league and federation approval.
The first of the signings occurred on March 2 when Charlie Reymann signed his deal. He joined Steel FC on a trial when preseason camp opened on Feb. 1 at YSC Sports. The 22-year-old defender impressed the team staff during the first three weeks of training camp and his signing adds depth to the club’s roster.
A four-year letterman at the University of Kentucky, Reymann compiled 77 starts in 80 career games. During his final his final three seasons with the Wildcats, the left-back started 60 straight games while serving as a corner kick specialist . During his time in Kentucky, Reymann had 21 assists including 10 in his final senior season to lead the team.
A captain his final two seasons as a Wildcat, Reymann led his squad to the NCAA Tournament three times. In 2016, Reymann helped anchor a defensive line that boasted a shutout percentage of 0.47, and a goals-against average of 0.80. Reymann was also a member of the 2013 and 2015 Conference USA All-Tournament Team. Prior to Reymann’s senior season at Kentucky, he played for Reading United in the Premier Development League.
On March 3, Steel announced the team signed defender Matt Mahoney to his first professional contract. Mahoney initially joined Steel FC on a trial when preseason camp opened on Feb. 1 at YSC Sports. The 21-year-old right back impressed the team staff during over the opening month of training camp.
A four-year letterman and two-year captain at Temple University, Mahoney appeared in all 78 games during his Owl career. During the period, he earned 62 starts, including a streak of 55 straight starts to cap off his Temple career. The Buffalo, New York native contributed to 17 clean sheets throughout his career and added three goals and five assists. Prior to his senior season, Mahoney played with the New Jersey Express in the Premier Development League.
The latest deal came on March 8, when the club agreed to terms with forward Chris Nanco. A third-round pick by Philadelphia Union in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, Nanco joins Steel FC after playing the previous four years at Syracuse. During his college career, Nanco appeared in 84 matches, earning 80 starts. He scored 20 goals during that stretch, including a team-high seven during his senior year last fall.
The forward led his squad to three NCAA Tournament appearances and was an All-ACC first team selection his senior year. Prior to joining Syracuse, Nanco helped Canada to a silver medal at the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Jamaica. Nanco was also a member of the Canadian U-17 World Cup squad that competed in Mexico that year.
Fans will get their first opportunity to see these players and the rest of the squad on April 1, when Steel FC opens its second season against Rochester Rhinos at 4 p.m. at Goodman Stadium, located on the campus of Lehigh University.
