AROUND THE LEAGUE: LA Galaxy drops home match to Sounders and more

Loons turning things around

After conceding 11 goals in their first two matches and spending five of their first seven MLS games on the road, Minnesota United turned in a 1-0 home win against Colorado Rapids. It was Minnesota’s first time keeping a clean sheet in MLS.

With seven points in its last four games, Minnesota is just one point out of the playoff picture through eight games.

Petke loses first match

Since Mike Petke took over the head coaching spot for Real Salt Lake, the group hadn’t lost a game. That all ended on Saturday when Atlanta United earned themselves a 3-1 victory against Petke’s team.

The result caps a four-game road trip for Atlanta, who managed to compile five points during that time. It was also the club’s first win since back-to-back multi-goal victories in March.

Seattle wins in LA

In a Western Conference showdown between a pair of perennial powerhouses, Seattle Sounders trounced the host LA Galaxy, 3-0, to snap a three-game winless streak.

Clint Dempsey led the way with a goal and an assist, while Jordan Morris also scored for the defending MLS Cup champs. LA’s Ashley Cole registered an own goal in the loss.

Chicharito in the City of Angels?

Even though Los Angeles FC won't make its MLS debut until 2018, they have still been at the center of MLS player news. The team has been courting Mexican national team and current Bayer Leverkusen forward Chicharito, and talks to bring him stateside has seen "significant" progress, according to a league source. Rumors of the deal would have LAFC pay Chicharito $10 million per season, which would make him the highest salaried player in MLS history.

Larin loves New York

Cyle Larin struck twice to guide Orlando City past New York City FC 2-1 at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Larin has now scored 13 goals combined against NYCFC and the Red Bulls, including nine goals in seven games vs. New York City FC.

NYCFC’s David Villa struck on a set piece to halve the deficit and set up a tense finish, but Orlando hung on desperately and saw out a valuable road win.
