Andre Blake wins Independence Blue Cross Player of the Year through fan vote

The fans have spoken. The 2016 Philadelphia Union Player of the Year presented by Independence Blue Cross is goalkeeper Andre Blake! The human highlight-reel did not disappoint in his first full season in the Philadelphia net. The only goalkeeper in MLS history to be selected No. 1 overall in the MLS SuperDraft set personal best in almost every goalkeeping category in his first full season as a starter. Blake finished with 32 starts, six shutouts, 99 saves and 10 wins in regular season play.  He was awarded Goal.com Goalkeeper of the Year and has been nominated for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

Blake was the only qualifying MLS goalkeeper to not allow a penalty kick goal this season. Blake was also the starting keeper in the 2016 MLS All-Star Game against English Premier League Power Arsenal. In that match, Blake recorded a phenomenal save in the 26th minute that saved a goal. Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny sent a missile towards the MLS net which seemed destined for a goal. Blake leapt in the air and was able to get a fingertip on the ball sending the shot over the net. The save was so sensational that it earned the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the night. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the starting keeper for the Reggae Boyz was nominated for MLS Save of the Week 12 times this season.
