Playing their second match of the Suncoast Invitational and their first of the tournament at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, Philadelphia Union drew the Montreal Impact by a 2-2 final, taking their record in the preseason event to 1-0-1.
The first Union goal came in the 34th minute, courtesy of Ilsinho. The Brazilian took a pass from Fabian Herbers, made a skillful dribble toward the middle of the field and fired past Montreal keeper Maxime Crepeau from roughly 25 yards.
Earlier in the half, the Union created some excellent chances, with the first coming in the fourth minute following a Jay Simpson cross that narrowly missed a leaping Alejandro Bedoya, who wore the armband for Philadelphia to begin the evening. Not to be outdone, Andre Blake made several quality stops in the first stanza, the first a dive to his right in the 14th minute on a volleyed attempt and the second a stop of a one-on-one attempt right after the restart following Ilsinho's goal.
Philadelphia made two changes to start the second half. John McCarthy came in for Blake in goal, while Roland Alberg replaced Derrick Jones, with Bedoya dropping back in midfield. After a series of chances, the Union made wholesale substitutions in the 63rd minute, replacing eight players, with Herbers being the lone holdover from the original XI.
In the 68th minute, Montreal leveled the contest through Nick DePuy, who scored after a run and a centering pass by Chris Duvall. C.J. Sapong nearly put Philadelphia back in front in the 70th minute, but his sliding attempt was saved by Crepeau inches from the line. In the 76th minute, McCarthy stonewalled DePuy's attempt at a brace by making a breakaway stop on the forward.
Philadelphia made an additional change in the 77th minute when Union Academy player Anthony Fontana replaced Herbers, the second appearance of the preseason for the 17-year-old. Five minutes later, the Union again went ahead when Sapong converted a header from his knees after Ken Tribbett's centering effort. Brian Carroll's long-ball to Tribbett started the sequence for the Union. However, in the 90th minute, Anthony Jackson-Hamel tied it for the Impact when a low shot deflected off a Union defender and snuck inside McCarthy's post.
