Philadelphia Union continues to rack up the awards across MLS. Earlier today Chris Pontius was announced as the MLS Player of the Week for his performance against Columbus Crew SC on Wednesday.
MLS has also announced that Keegan Rosenberry and Vincent Nogueira have been named to the team of the week for their contributions in the 3-2 victory over Columbus. Tranquillo Barnetta was named to the MLS Team of the Week bench.
Nogueira was little time making his presence felt. This was his first match since May 14, after missing three matches with a strained oblique. Nogueira scored a goal in the 57th minute giving the Union a 2-1 lead. The Frenchman came charging into the box and found a pass from Pontius and buried it home.
Rosenberry also played a crucial part in the victory. In the 77th minute Rosenberry drew a foul on the far side of the pitch from former Union standout Conor Casey. The ref deemed the foul worthy of a red card and the Union played with a man advantage for 18 minutes. Philadelphia took advantage as Fabian Herbers scored the game-winning goal on a 2v1 attack.
Rosenberry is the only rookie in MLS to have played every minute this season.
Tranquillo Barnetta was all over the pitch on Wednesday. The Swiss midfielder got off four shots and took eight corners for the Union.
The Union enter the Copa America Centenario break at the top of the table in the Eastern Conference with 23 points.
