There was no shortage of goals on Wednesday night as Union Academy member Rayshaun McGann help lead the U.S. U-17 club to an impressive 7-1 victory over Portugal in their first match of the 2016 NIKE International Friendlies.
Scoring started off early with Andrew Carleton converting on a penalty kick in the eighth minute, and just moments later Josh Sargent gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead with a shot to the lower left post off a great assist from Ayo Akinola.
After Portugal got on the board in the 23rd minute, the U.S. answered back with goals in the 37th, 55th, 63rd, 82nd, and in stoppage time. Both Carleton and Sargent recorded braces on the evening and McGann’s late-game goal help send the U.S. side home with a six-goal advantage early on in the tournament.
The U.S. is currently sitting atop of the table after their big win, with Brazil close behind in second. Next up for the Red, White, and Blue is a match against Turkey, scheduled for Friday night at 7 PM
