Philadelphia Union will begin play in the second annual Suncoast Invitational in St. Petersburg, Florida on Saturday evening when they take on Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium. Saturday’s match will take place at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on YouTube.
The Union will look to continue their strong efforts in the Suncoast Invitational after earning a 2-0-2 record last season. Philadelphia squared off with Tampa Bay last year on Feb. 16, when the Union left Al Lang with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Rowdies.
Saturday will give the Union faithful a chance to see the Boys in Blue in action for just the second time in competitive action this preseason. Philadelphia Union Head Coach Jim Curtin will have plenty of options to play with on his squad for Saturday’s match.
With offseason acquisitions Giliano Wijnaldum, Jay Simpson, Oguchi Onyewu, Fafa Picault, Haris Medunjanin and Adam Najem, the Union have built their roster with a surplus of depth that will surely come in handy as the dog days of summer approach.
In the meantime, the newest arrivals to wear the Union crest will use the Suncoast Invitational as a chance to mesh with the nucleus Philadelphia has created already. The club got a taste of action this week with an extended scrimmage against MLS Conference foe Orlando City SC.
The Union created fireworks with three goals from Simpson, Ilson Jr and CJ Sapong.
Players to watch for Tampa Bay begin with the club’s newest striker Darwin Jones. The forward spent the last two seasons with Seattle Sounders bouncing between the first team and Sounders 2. At the USL level Jones found the back of the net seven times in 17 starts. The Rowdies also have a face that Union fans will notice in Leo Fernandes. The midfielder, who made 32 appearances for the Union, signed with Tampa Bay in January of 2017.
