Union advance in U.S. Open Cup play: Philadelphia Union Head Coach Jim Curtin used his first choice midfield and defense, with Ilsinho and Fafa Picault flanking Cory Burke. Coming off a midweek matchup with Seattle Sounders, New York changed shape to use three central defenders, two wingbacks, and Tyler Adams sitting behind Kaku, Derrick Etienne, and Marc Rzatkowski in midfield. Carlos Rivas, all speed and power, led the line alone, but the Union was able to walk away with a 2-1 win and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Coach Curtin on the win: “The only disappointing part of the night is that we didn’t get a third goal to kind of kill the game off,” Head Coach Jim Curtin said to open his press conference. After spurning numerous chances early, the Union got two from Haris Medunjanin and Cory Burke to provide a bit of security. Once Bradley Wright-Phillips pulled one back, though, Philly could not get the extra goal that would have been a knockout blow to Jesse Marsch’s men.
