Vice President Biden to Kick Off Opener

CHESTER, Pa. (April 8, 2010) – Vice President of the United States Joe Biden will return home to the Delaware Valley on Saturday, April 10th when Philadelphia Union kicks off their inaugural home season at 6 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field. The former Delaware senator will participate in the first kick ceremonies prior to the Union’s game against D.C. United.

Biden will be joined by Philadelphia and American soccer legend Walter Bahr, who is most famous for his game-winning assist in the United States’ victory over England in the 1950 World Cup.

Born in Scranton, Pa., Biden was first elected to the United States Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, becoming the sixth-youngest Senator in U.S. history. He served the state of Delaware for 36 years before joining now-President Barack Obama on the Democratic ticket for the 2008 Presidential election.

As the 47th Vice President of the United States, Biden has continued his leadership on important issues facing the nation. He has been tasked with implementing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, helping to rebuild the nation’s economy and lay the foundation for a sustainable economic future. Biden is also the chair of the administration’s Middle Class Task Force, a major White House initiative targeted at raising the living standards of middle class families in America. In addition, he is providing sustained, high level focus for the administration on Iraq policy and has traveled to the country multiple times since being elected as Vice President.
MEDIA NOTE: All photographers and cameras must arrive to the Lincoln Financial Field Photography Work Room by 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 10 in order to have their equipment checked by security. Failure to arrive on time may result in denied access to the pre-game ceremonies.
