John McCarthy Generic In Goal

John McCarthy makes stellar saves in 0-0 draw against New York Red Bulls

Philadelphia Union played a scoreless draw against New York Red Bulls Wednesday night in the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Suncoast Invitational. A game that saw high intensity and physical play, both teams had chances on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Red Bulls saw the majority of the attack during the physical first half that had six yellow cards with five of those going to Union players. Just before the half, Ilsinho received his second yellow card after a late tackle on Gideon Baah and the Union continued with 10 men. Sebastien Le Toux, Brian Caroll and Vincent Nogueira were also booked.

Despite playing a man down, the Union had the better opportunities in the second half. New signing Roland Alberg took a couple of free kicks late into the second half that looked to go in but just missed the goal.

John McCarthy made several vital saves to get his first shutout of the year.  Now in his second season with the Union, the young keeper has had some strong games against the Red Bulls.

Despite historically playing strongly against the Red Bulls, to McCarthy it is just another game.

“I am happy to get another game under my belt and I proud of the guys for pulling out a tie in a tough situation,” said McCarthy. “We knew Red Bulls would be a tough opponent and would stick it to us, but I thought we created some good chances and had some good opportunities as well.”

The Union will play their final game of the tournament against Toronto FC on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. at Al Lang Stadium.
