Roland Alberg has been named to the MLS Team of the Week for week 16 to the surprise of no one.
Alberg finished the week with four goals in two matches, including a hat trick in the midweek contest against Chicago Fire.
Alberg‘s first goal of week came in the 15th minute against Chicago. Tranquillo Barnetta sent a shot from outside of the box that again, hit the post. The ball found its way to Fabian Herbers who gently tapped the ball over to Alberg. Using his right foot, Alberg buried home the second goal for the Union.
Alberg doubled his scoring total in the first half in stoppage time. He had his first opportunity denied by a Fire defender, but as the ball bounced back his way, Alberg calmly readjusted and blasted one past Sean Johnson and the rest of the Fire for a two-goal lead.
Alberg’s third goal was set up by Chris Pontius who a run into the box and was dragged down and awarded the penalty kick. Alberg stepped up and delivered home the attempt, recording the second hat-trick in franchise history.
The only other hat-trick came on April 10, 2010 from Le Toux.
Alberg found the back of the net again on Saturday. The play was set up as Alberg took a pass from Tranquillo Barnetta and one-touched it to Fabian Herbers in the box. Herbers then sent a shot that rang off the post and after a deflection from Le Toux, Alberg finished the job. His goal was his fifth in three MLS matches and seventh in his last four overall games.
Alberg and the Union return to action this week hosting New York Red Bulls in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, before traveling to Houston to take on the Dynamo.
