There are three possible destinations for the Union’s knockout match in the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs; Toronto, New York City, and Washington D.C. Here are the possible scenarios that would result in each of those matchups.
Scenario 1: Union travel to NYCFC
- If Toronto beats Chicago and NYCFC loses or draws to Columbus, then Toronto will advance to second in the East and New York will fall to third. If Union draws or loses to Red Bulls, they will stay in sixth and will travel to Yankee Stadium next Wednesday or Thursday.
Scenario 2: Union travel to Toronto
- Current order of the Eastern Conference must stay as-is, meaning Toronto cannot bypass NYCFC and Union cannot bypass Montreal. If the order remains untouched by Sunday evening, Union will be heading up north.
Scenario 3: Union travel to D.C.
- If D.C. United stays in fourth, Union would then have to flip-flop with Montreal with a win over Red Bulls and a Montreal loss to New England. In that case, Philadelphia and Montreal will be tied in points but Union would then take the edge in total number of wins and jump to fifth and be matched up against D.C. for the knockout round next week.
Either way the Union will be on the road next week, it’s just a matter of if they will need a passport or not.
