The Union host Portland to kick-off a three game homestand. The match Saturday starts at 7:00 p.m. Here are just a few reasons why you should come out and watch the Union take on the Timbers.
Home Opener Part DOOP
The Union’s first home opener featured 32 degree, windy weather. Fans were bundled up. But Saturday, it’s going to be a much warmer 59 and sunny. As such, the Union are dubbing the match against Portland the Home Opener Part DOOP. All of the features on game day will be on display throughout the game. From the Union Drumline, to the Union Ale House, from giant banners and parachute drops to plaza dogs and food trucks, there will be plenty for Union fans to be excited about on game day. And in addition to it being the Home Opener Part DOOP, the Union are also hosting Youth Soccer Night against the Timbers. It’s all a part to improve an already great game day atmosphere, and it’s one you’re not going to want to miss.
Sapong on fire
In his last three games, CJ Sapong has scored three goals, which is the second-longest goal streak of his career. He tied the match against Toronto FC, and scored the Union’s only goals against Orlando City SC and DC United. His three goals lead the team along with shots (10) and shots on goal (six), and has quickly become the focal point of the Union attack. When Portland comes to town, he’ll look to extend his goal streak to four games, tying his career high.
One and done
When Portland comes to town, it will be the only time Union fans will be able to see the Timbers play against the Boys in Blue. Being in the Western Conference, the teams only face each other once every season. It’s also the first time since 2015 Portland travels to Philadelphia for the game. It’s your only chance to see US Men’s National Team player Darlington Nagbe, or stars such as Fanendo Adi or Diego Valeri. You’re not going to want to miss it.
