When you first meet Dan Czar, you can instantly tell he loves what he does. He’s passionate, engaging and loves to show off his work.
It’s hard to imagine he’s been tattooing for less than three years.
Czar got his first tattoo when he was 16. He had always been attracted to drawing and art, especially tattoos. When he was finally old enough, he started apprenticing, and got his tattoo license at the age of 21.
“It’s been a short amount of time, but I’ve gotten into it pretty quickly, pretty swiftly,” Czar said.
Being a young man in the tattoo field hasn’t stopped him from quickly making a name for himself. Czar works out of AC Ink in Atlantic City, but has tattooed all over the nation. He’s worked at conventions in numerous states, and has even flown to cities such as Nashville to tattoo NFL players.
Now, his goal is to be the Union’s first ever Chief Tattoo Officer.
Initially seeing the post online, Czar knew it was something he was destined to do. Being one of the 135 to apply wasn’t even a second thought. He applied, and now sits as one of the final five being considered for the position.
“When I saw it online, I thought it was really innovative, really new, and that’s always what I try to bring to the table,” Czar said. “When I saw the position online, I knew it was meant for me.”
Czar primarily works in black and gray; it’s what he loves to tattoo, but it’s also what he’s good at. However, he knows that as an artist, you have to be able to tackle whatever walks through the door, and can tattoo all different styles well.
“My style in particular is black and gray,” Czar said. “Black and gray realism, anything pretty detailed is what I prefer to do. But I’ve trained myself to do everything. During the apprenticeship process, we learn anything and everything, and that’s where I pride myself, that I can take any style and really make it my own.”
To be the Union’s Chief Tattoo Artist would be a dream job for Czar. Growing up, he played soccer and is still a big fan of the game, and just sports in general. With his love for tattoos and soccer, Czar can’t think of anything that would be better.
“Since I’ve started tattooing, my goal has been to tattoo the best of the best, which are athletes,” Czar said. “I’m a Philadelphia native, and I played soccer growing up. If I’m picked for the position, it would be a dream for me.”
