Everything you need to know about the MLS SuperDraft 2018 presented by adaidas

The MLS SuperDraft 2018 presented by adidas is returning to Philadelphia next Friday, January 19 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches convention. The convention includes MLS-led programming during the world’s largest gathering of soccer coaches and administrators.

For fans who may not know exactly how the process works, the Union is here to break down everything you need to know heading into the SuperDraft.

Understanding the Basics

The SuperDraft is similar to any other professional sports draft and provides an opportunity for MLS clubs to acquire new, young talent through four rounds of selections. The selection order is determined by club's previous season's performance, with the exception of Los Angeles Football Club who will be granted the first pick. Potential selectees are comprised of players who have finished out their NCAA career or have forfeited their collegiate pursuits in hopes of making it pro.

Immediately following the SuperDraft, rounds 3 and 4 of the selection process will be conducted via conference call on Jan. 21. During this time, teams can add any players to their rosters who have completed their college eligibility, as well as young and international players who have not already been chosen in earlier rounds.

Each of the 23 MLS clubs will participate in the SuperDraft. Some teams will be able to hold more than one pick in the round, while others may not choose any due to trading or allocation money purposes. Starting on Jan. 11-17, the 2018 adidas MLS Player Combine will take place at Orlando City Stadium for young stars hoping to break into MLS to showcase their skills. Each player will be placed in a group to present their talent throughout the course of the week The initial list released on Dec. 21 featured 60 players chosen by NCAA Division I and MLS coaches.

MLS recently announced the six players who will make up the 2018 Generation adidas class along with an additional three college seniors.

Fans will be able to tune in live to watch the Combine as well as the MLS SuperDraft 2018 presented by adidas on MLSsoccer.com.
