UNION FACT CHECK: Team begins preseason training

Philadelphia Union returned to preseason training this week ahead of its 2018 campaign along with new acquisition David Accam.

  • Philadelphia Union will begin their second week of preseason action on Tuesday, January 30, when the team flies to Florida to begin the first of two sessions in Clearwater, Florida.
  • The first session runs from January 30 through February 8, including scrimmages at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex against the New York Red Bulls (Saturday, February 3 at 11:00 a.m. ET), the University of South Florida (Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m. ET) and the Chicago Fire (Thursday, February 8 at 11:00 a.m. ET).
  • Last night, Philadelphia Union had two starters in the United States – Bosnian match. CJ Sapong started for the USMNT and Haris Medunjanin started for Bosnia.
  • This offseason the Union acquired proven MLS goal-scorer David Accam and joins the club as a Designated Player.
  • Accam joins the Union following three seasons with the Fire, over which he scored 33 goals and added 15 assists. He scored at least nine goals in each of his three campaigns with Chicago.
  • Since he came to MLS in 2015, Accam is one of just six MLS players to total at least 33 goals and 15 assists in league play
  • Philadelphia announced a new multi-year contract with 2016 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year finalist Andre Blake.
  • Blake, 27, was originally selected by the Philadelphia Union in the First Round as the first overall pick of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft on January 16, 2014. Named an MLS All-Star and MLS Best XI in 2016
  • In 2017, Blake set a career-high nine shutouts and posted his lowest goals-against-average of his career with 1.31.
  • In the last calendar year, Philadelphia has had 12 players on their roster report to their national teams at both the senior level and U-20 level.
  • CJ Sapong will return up top for Philadelphia in 2018. Sapong recorded 16 goals in 2017 for Philadelphia, setting a new franchise record for goals scored in a season.
  • 13 of Sapong’s 16 goals came at Talen Energy Stadium, the most ever recorded at home by a Union player.
  • Sapong’s 16 goals shattered a career high. Sapong’s previous career-high for goals scored in a season was nine.
  • Haris Medunjanin recorded 12 assists in 2017, the most ever in a season for a Union player in his first season with the club.
  • Medunjanin’s 12 assists are tied for second-most in a single-season by a Union player in club history.
  • Philadelphia has invested in their homegrown talent, with the addition of two more signings in Mark McKenzie and Matt Real. The Union now have five homegrown products on their roster including Anthony Fontana, Derrick Jones and Auston Trusty.
