Richie Marquez continues to earn national recognition. The dominating center back was named to MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for week.
Week 12 was one to remember for the University of Redlands product. In the 91st minute Marquez recorded his first MLS goal against D.C. United last Friday at Talen Energy Stadium. Marquez crashed hard to the box and found a cross that came from the foot of Sebastien Le Toux. Marquez was able to bury home the game-winner to lift Philadelphia to the top of the table in the Eastern Conference.
It wasn’t just his timely goal that has drawn attention from the league. He has solidified a backline that has combined for three shutouts this season, all at Talen Energy Stadium.
Marquez’s teammate Andre Blake was also mentioned by MLSsoccer.com being named to their Team of the Week bench. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft has been nothing short of sensational at Talen Energy Stadium.
The Jamaican keeper has a career record of 5-1-2 with a 0.63 goals against average at Talen Energy Stadium. Blake recorded his third shutout of the season Friday against D.C. United.
United created their biggest threat of the night when Alvaro Saborio found a ball off a corner and forced Blake to make a highlight reel save. Blake was shifting to his right and had to reach back towards his left and deflected the ball away from net. The save undoubtedly gave the Union three points on the night.
Marquez, Blake and the rest of the defense for the Union will have their work cut out for them this week as they hit the road for two matches. The first contest takes place against Kaka and Orlando City SC, and then Philadelphia will travel west to face the Western Conference leaders Colorado Rapids.
