Jay Cunliffe and his brother Josh have been sports fans for their entire lives. It didn’t matter which team it was; if it was Philadelphia, then they loved the team.
When the Union were announced, they immediately became fans.
They were in attendance for the team’s first ever game at Talen Energy Stadium, a 3-1 victory against Seattle Sounders. The two have stayed fans of the team since that moment, and took an even bigger step when the Union announced their Chief Tattoo Officer search.
Jay and Josh are not only brothers, but also two work at Bonedaddys Tattoo, Jay as an artist and Josh as the shop's manager. Bonedaddys located just 10 minutes from Talen Energy Stadium in Astor, PA, and the two have been in the tattoo business for more than 14 years, even opening Bonedaddys in 2010. Together, along with the other artists in their shop, Bonedaddys has become a go-to shop for tattoos in the Delaware Valley.
“As a whole, I don’t think there’s a tattoo we can’t do,” Jay said. “Between all of us, we all have specific styles we specialize in. There’s nothing we can’t do.”
Bonedaddys originally heard of the Union’s Chief Tattoo Officer position through social media, when the team announced the initiative. Jay talked to Josh and the rest of the shop, and everyone agreed this was a chance to work with a team they love in an industry they love.
“When I saw the posting, I was pretty excited to do professional, high-quality tattoos on professional athletes,” Jay said. “Especially here in the Philadelphia area with the Philadelphia Union.”
The two, along with the rest of the shop, decided to apply for the Union’s CTO position, one of 135 applicants to do so. From there, they progressed to a semifinalist, and then were chosen by the Union as one of the five finalists.
For Bonedaddys Tattoo, being named CTO would be a continuation of what they have tried to do in their shop; be quintessential Philadelphia, much like the Union have been doing of late. And there’s no greater display of that Philly mindset than Jay’s Benjamin Franklin tattoo on his left shin.
“Being from Philadelphia, the whole aspect of how the Union got its name, the Revolutionary War ties, Benjamin Franklin, how can you not be attracted to the job,” Jay said. “I have a Ben Franklin tattoo on my leg. So it ties in with the Sons of Ben, Philadelphia Union, it’s meant to be.”
Jay and the rest of Bonedaddys Tattoo are excited for being so far in the process and making it to the top five of the competition. But they also believe they can be the best shop for the Union’s CTO position.
“I think we’re the best for this job because of the quality of work we offer,” Jay said. “Our personality, our reputation speaks for itself. I’d think we be a perfect fit.”
