After leading the Jamaican National Team to a runner’s up finish in the 2017 Caribbean Cup, Bethlehem Steel FC forward Cory Burke has been named to 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup Squad. Burke is part of the final 23-man roster with the tournament set to begin across the United States on July 7. The Group Stage concludes on July 16, and the Knockout Round begins on July 19, including a doubleheader at Lincoln Financial Field, with the final set for July 26 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.
This is Burke’s sixth consecutive senior team call up and fourth of this year along. Burke started both of the squad’s matches of the Caribbean Cup in Martinique and helped push the team to the finals with the winning goal during penalty kicks against French Guiana on June 22. In the final, Burke played 70 minute before being subbed off in the second half. Earlier this year, Burke started vs. the USA on February 3 and came on as a second-half substitute vs. Honduras on February 16. He also started for Jamaica in a friendly against at Peru on June 14, playing 70 minutes.
Late last year, Burke helped the Reggae Boyz to victories over Guyana and Suriname in Caribbean Cup qualification, notching his first international goal in an extra time win over Guyana in October. Burke also scored the winning goal against Suriname in November to help secure Jamaica’s berth in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
For Bethlehem in 2017, Burke has appeared in 11 matches (nine starts), scoring two goals in 861 minutes. Scoring twice from the spot, Burke notched the game-winner against Toronto FC II on May 13 and scored his other goal against in-state rival Harrisburg City Islanders on May 28. Burke stands as one of the club’s top scorers, tallying six goals in 25 appearances.
Burke and Jamaica are drawn into Group C of the tournament. The Reggae Boyz are slated to face Curacao (July 9, San Diego), Mexico (July 13, Denver) and El Salvador (July 16, San Antonio) throughout the Group Stage. He will report to camp in Jamaica on Monday, July 3.
Burke and Steel FC returns to action on Saturday, July 1 hosting the Richmond Kickers. Kickoff from Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University is set for 5 p.m.
