Philadelphia Union battled the University of South Florida to a 5-1 win in its second preseason scrimmage in Clearwater, Florida.
CJ Sapong opened the scoring in the third minute of play with an assist from Olivier Mbaizo.
Three minutes later, Union goalkeeper John McCarthy denied USF from scoring, diving to his left in the box for his first big save in the match. In the 12th minute, McCarthy blocked the ball again, tipping a header over the crossbar.

After forward Cory Burke came on for Sapong, he was fouled in the box earning a penalty but, midfielder Fabian Herbers was ultimately unable to convert the penalty kick.
Mbaizo earned his second assist of the night when Herbers found the back of the net in the 40th minute. Five minutes later, USF scored its only goal of the match off a corner kick.
Midfielder Marcus Epps netted a goal against his alma mater in the 67th minute followed by a goal from Burke in the 70th.
Burke closed the match in the 82nd minute of play when he recorded his second goal earning the brace and securing the Union's 5-1 win.
The Boys in Blue will compete in their third preseason scrimmage when they take on Chicago Fire on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. The team will then travel back to Philadelphia following the match to conclude its first stint of preseason.
